Wynoes Herdenkingsfunksie / Wine Harvest Commemorative Event
The South African wine industry celebrates a special occasion on Thursday 6 February 2020 when it commemorates the industry’s first vintage on South African soil on 2 February 1659, as recorded by Jan van Riebeeck.
The annual Wine Harvest Commemorative event takes place at South Africa’s oldest wine estate, Groot Constantia Estate, which was established in 1685 by the then Governor, Simon van der Stel.
During this event a special 1659 medal of honour will be awarded to a South African wine icon. This medal has been awarded since 1974 to persons who have made a significant mark in the wine industry.
This formal evening is known for three special events, namely the Blessing on the Harvest, the commemoration of the wine industry’s 361st year of existence, and especially the honouring of a wine icon or institution with the special 1659 medal of honour for his, her or its contribution to the industry. This medal has been awarded to significant role-players in the industry since 1974. They also act as ambassadors.
