The South African Dairy Championships

The first South African Dairy Championships was held in 1833 by this Society.  Today, more than 800 dairy products are judged by more than 80 judges in 10 categories.   Agri-Expo created the Qualité emblem in 2000 and today it is South Africa’s only symbol of exceptional quality in the Dairy Industry.  Winning products are crowned SA Champions and only a few products are awarded with the Qualité Mark of Excellence.  The Dairy Product of the Year is chosen by a panel of judges.

South African Cheese Festival

The South African (SA) Cheese Festival, the biggest outdoor culinary event in Southern Africa, was started in 2002 to create a platform for the dairy Industry to showcase products to a captured audience of more than 30 000 people.  The SA Cheese Festival was nominated as a project of the Western Cape by the Premier of the Western Cape at the Fifth Regional Leaders Summit.

The SA Cheese Festival has been awarded numerous accolades of BEST EXHIBITION in Southern Africa by EXSA (Exhibitions and Events Association for Southern Africa), BEST EXHIBITION in Africa by AAXO (African Association of Exhibition Organisers), as well as FESTIVAL OF THE YEAR by the Cape Wineland’s District Municipality in 2018.

Burgundy Cheese Makers Fellowship

Since 2005, Agri-Expo has been the programme leader for this training initiative by the Western Cape Department of Agriculture to send junior cheese makers to France to gain cheese making knowledge as part of the highly successful cooperative agreement between the Burgundy and Western Cape Governments.

Numerous individuals who benefitted from this programme have since excelled by developing new cheese, improving existing ones, as well as upgrading production methods and plant layouts.
